Fall is the time of year when we say good bye to summer, reflect on a year of training and competition and start planning for the new year. It has been a difficult couple of years and many families have experienced much change. Some families survive paycheck to paycheck. As we are all well aware, karate is not an inexpensive activity and our provincial organization works hard to support our athletes.
There is a Government of Alberta program that allows interested donors to give money to support athlete development in the province and the government will match the monies donated. In addition, donors receive a tax receipt for their donation. Win win.
It is easy to donate.
Online: https://www.alberta.ca/sport-physical-activity-and-recreation-donation-form.aspx (just remember to select Karate as your chosen sport) or By cheque: https://albertasport.ca/programs/donations-fund-program/donation-fund-guidelines/
Karate Alberta will use the donations to support our athletes training and competition at national and international levels and then the matched funds will be used to set up a scholarship program for athletes whose families are facing financial challenges in supporting their athletes.
For the scholarship program, it is intended to support travel to nationals or international tournaments. There will have to be a cap per athlete per year, dependent on the amount of money available. Athletes and parents can apply through their sensei to Karate Alberta. It is easy to apply. Fill in the attached application. It includes an essay from the athlete detailing their commitment to karate and why they feel they deserve funding, references and a letter of support from their dojo/coach as to what they are doing to support their athletes apart from paid classes. Athletes will be expected to commit to an additional volunteer activity supporting karate activities in Alberta (above what is required by Karate Alberta). This could include coaching junior athletes in your dojo or at provincial training activities or whatever creative ideas you can think of. Please include details in your application.
If you and your athlete are experiencing hardship, we want to help and we encourage your athlete to apply. All applications will be held in the strictest confidence.

After you make a donation, please email Jasen Pratt firstname.lastname@example.org with your name, and amount donated so that we can track the funds. KA will receive the money from this fund in about March 2023 so having numbers will help plan for scholarship amounts.
Remember the deadline is December 30, 2022 for matching funds.
