Coaches Pathway

Pathway to Becoming a Karate Alberta Coach

Coaching Karate is different from being a dojo Sensei teaching Karate. Coaching the team is about providing information for developing athletic abilities, technical and tactical skills to improve athletes’ ability to be successful in competition. Coaching for Karate Alberta is where coaches and athletes are immersed in a competitive environment where they assist athletes to perform to their potential.  Karate Alberta encourages dojo coaches and retired KA athletes to attend Karate Alberta training events at no cost. 

All coaches who would like to participate as a coach (attend KA Team events) must complete an application and be approved/hired in one of the following positions: 

Developmental Coach

  • Member of Karate Alberta in Good Standing 
  • Minimum: NCCP Instructor Beginner Trained and register for Competition Intro 
  • Attend Athlete/Coach Developmental Camps 
  • Submit Application to KA Coaching Committee 
  • Complete First Aid course from a recognized first aid training organization in Canada, renewed every 3 years 
  • Complete Police information Check (“PIC”) with Vulnerable Sector Check (“VSC”) as per KA’s specifications, and KA disclosure form

  • Upon application as a Developmental coach your application will be reviewed for approval to participate at Karate Alberta team events for the season. 

Event Coach 

  • Member of Karate Alberta in Good Standing 
  • Complete NCCP Competition Intro Course 
  • Experience as a Developmental Coach 
  • Attend Athlete/Coach Developmental Camps 
  • Submit Application to KA Coaching Committee 
  • Complete First Aid course from a recognized first aid training organization in Canada, renewed every 3 years 
  • Complete Police information Check (“PIC”) with Vulnerable Sector Check (“VSC”) as per KA’s specifications, and KA disclosure form

  • Upon application as an Event coach your application will be reviewed for approval to participate at Karate Alberta team events for the season. 

Head Coach

  • Member of Karate Alberta in Good Standing  
  • Complete NCCP Comp Dev Course 
  •  Submit Application 
  • Complete First Aid course from a recognized first aid training organization in Canada, renewed every 3 years 
  •  Complete Police information Check (“PIC”) with Vulnerable Sector Check (“VSC”) as per KA’s specifications, and KA disclosure form 
  •  Applications will open after Nationals 2024 

Technical Director

  • Member of Karate Alberta in Good Standing 
  • Complete NCCP Comp Dev Course 
  •  Experience as a Provincial Head Coach 
  •  Submit Application to KA Board of Directors 
  • Complete First Aid course from a recognized first aid training organization in Canada, renewed every 3 years 
  • Complete Police information Check (“PIC”) with Vulnerable Sector Check (“VSC”) as per KA’s specifications, and KA disclosure form 
  • Applications will open after Nationals 2024 
Annually:
  • Coaching Committee will establish criteria for Prospects to become KA Provincial Team Members to attend KC Nationals
  • Criteria will include:
    • Results at KA Tournaments
    • Attendance and participation in Team Trainings
    • Appropriate behaviour and adherence to rules and conduct
    • Continual training and improvement from training to training
    • Fulfillment of volunteer requirements
    • Good standing with KA
